(AP) ? Afghanistan's civilian casualty toll has jumped this year as insurgents fight to recapture territory from the departing American-led coalition, a U.N. report showed on Wednesday.

The number of dead rose 14 percent, and wounded 28 percent, compared with January-June last year, UNAMA, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan, said in its mid-year report.

It blamed the insurgency for 74 percent of the casualties, while the Taliban defended itself by claiming they were mostly legitimate targets because they were working for its enemy, the Western-backed government.

Civilian casualties had dropped following U.S. President Barack Obama's 30,000-troop surge. But UNAMA's latest report cited an intensifying Taliban campaign to recapture lost ground as the coalition, which is preparing to complete its withdrawal by the end of 2014, hands over security responsibilities to a rebuilt Afghan military and police force.

UNAMA said it counted 1,319 civilian deaths and 2,533 wounded from January to June, compared with 1,158 deaths and 1,976 wounded in the first six months of 2012..

It said most were caused by homemade bombs and mines on or near roads. Nine percent were attributed to the Afghan security forces and U.S.-led international military coalition, and 12 percent to ground engagements between pro-government forces and insurgents. The rest were either unattributed or caused by old explosive charges.

Many died in ground engagements in the east and south where the U.S. launched its 2009 surge to roll back the insurgents' significant gains.

The renewed fighting "presents an increasing risk to Afghan children, women and men," said Georgette Gagnon, head of human rights for UNAMA.

The report found that 207 civilians died and 764 were injured in clashes between Afghan forces and the Taliban, a 42 percent increase from the same period last year.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said that Afghan forces are taking more casualties because they are doing more of the fighting against the Taliban. She said it was "inevitable that the numbers will probably rise because they're taking on so much more capability. I think it's 80 percent of all security operations now."

Most foreign forces are to leave this year and there are already fewer than 100,000, 66,000 of them American. Plans to leave some troops are on hold pending signature of a delayed U.S.-Afghan security agreement.

Another cause cited by UNAMA for the intensified civilian bloodshed is a stepped-Taliban campaign against the Afghan Local Police, equipped and trained by the U.S. as a first line of defense in remote areas. These units live among the population, so civilians are more likely to be caught in the crossfire.

UNAMA also recorded 103 attacks on civilians working for the government, in which 114 died ? a 76 percent jump from the first half of last year.

Amirullah Aman, an Afghan political analyst and former army general, said the rise in civilian casualties was no surprise.

"The Taliban are using all their options, suicide attacks, organized attacks and roadside bomb attacks," he said. "Civilians are the victims in most of those attacks."

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid denounced the report as "baseless propaganda" driven by the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, and said the Taliban would keep targeting civilians it considers linked to the U.S.-led coalition or the administration of President Hamid Karzai.

"We never consider those people as civilians who are directly involved in our country's occupation and work with sensitive organs of the enemy," he said in an email.

In the last such attack, outside the Supreme Court building in Kabul on June 17, a suicide bomber killed 17 people, most of them office workers.

Abdul Jamil, a 55-year-old court janitor, was wounded. "I have lost my leg, I have lost my eye," he said. "How many other innocent people will face the same fate as me? Civilian casualties are increasing and no one pays any attention. It is just a like an animal being killed and no one cares."

MechWarrior community joins forces to fight cancer in memory of five-year-old fan

Five-year-old Sarah Parries would sit on her father Jon?s lap while he played MechWarrior Online, calling out shots and sometimes even taking her turn at the controls while she enjoyed time with her dad.

Sarah loved the ?Jenner,? a very quick mech that she could use to zoom around the battlefield using ?night?vision and lots of medium lasers.?

Early in 2013, Jon contacted the community team for MechWarrior Online to say that Sarah had cancer and if she could get a shout out on the message boards. Unfortunately, by the time they responded, Sarah had already passed away.

Then, in a heartwarming display of a gaming community coming together, the community petitioned the Mech Warrior developers and publisher to start a fundraising drive in her name.

Soon, ?Sarah?s Jenner? was born: A campaign to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer society. Players can buy a custom mech to use in the game for $10 and all of that money would go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

To date, the campaign has raised nearly $80,000. You can read more about the initiative here.

Kelly Zmak, president of Infinite Game Publishing and Bryan Ekman, creative director at developer Piranha Games talked to Post Arcade about the initiative.

Post Arcade: How was Sarah known in the community before the?tragedy?

Bryan Ekman: It was mostly Jon, her dad, who played and she participated as a father-daughter relationship. When Jon played she?d be there offering support and play along with him and she jumped on a few times. It was more about how she liked to watch him play.

Post Arcade: Essentially all of the money collected will be going to the Canadian Cancer society. Was that something that was hard to work out?

Kelly Zmak: We worked out some of the logistics of it and within the group to make sure we had the logistics set up. We wanted the focus to be on Sarah. Sometimes there are question marks on a charity, ?is it really going to be used for what it?s supposed to be used for?? So I think by keeping it simple, and by keeping it really straightforward, I think really helped. We truly felt this was something driven by the community, and something I think the community was looking for us to follow through with in that same sense of honour and respect. I think there is a high level of trust amongst the community for us to handle this well, and we made a commitment to do so. ? Nowhere in this are we planning on making any money.

Post Arcade: You talk about this being a community?initiative, is that something you?ve seen grown out of the Mech Warrior community a lot?

Bryan Ekman:We?ve seen it in different ways. Definitely community support for the game. Trying to build awareness of the game. Build awareness for some of the fan sites. We?ve seen the community rally together on multiple occasions, for different objectives, but this is the first time we?ve really seen them come together for another person. There?ve been obituaries in the past and there?ve been gamers who?ve passed away, but this has been the biggest rallying of our community I?ve ever seen.

Post Arcade: When did you guys find out that she had passed away?

Bryan Ekman: It was in May, Jon had reached out initially to the community team at IGP and said ?Hey could you give us a shout out to Sarah, my daughter who is sick. She has a cancerous tumour.? And by the time that we responded, she had already passed away. It was very, very quick.

Post Arcade: Is there any concern that Sarah?s Mech unbalance the game?

Bryan Ekman: No definitely not. It?s a stock mech with a meta-game boost (an XP-boost allows players to earn experience points a little faster). It?s absolutely just a regular Jenner mech with a custom loadout that anyone could create normally by themselves, however, what?s special about it for the community is the pattern (the skin that sits on top of the mech) and that extra 10% XP boost.

Post Arcade: When you began this whole process, what were your goals for the campaign and the total amount raised (sitting at about $70,000 as of the interview). Did you think you were going to hit your goals? Did you pass them already?

Bryan Ekman: I was personally hoping to hit $10,000. That?s a thousand backers. Yeah, we far exceeded that. Now sky?s the limit. It continues to be successful on a day-to-day basis. I don?t even know where it?s going to end. There are about 20 some-odd days left now. So, I?m looking at $100,000 hoping we?re going to hit that for sure. It would be amazing if we could go further and further. I don?t have a high target at this point. I?m just going to be humbled by what people give to us.

Kelly Zmak: We?ve all just been a little overwhelmed it?s been a very humbling experience.

Facebook looks set to open at IPO price a year after debut

This February 25, 2013 photo taken in Washington, DC, shows the splash page for the Internet social media giant Facebook.

More than a year after their rocky debut, Facebook shares traded above their $38 initial public offering price in early trading Wednesday.

Why are the shares taking off?

1. Mobile Games Publishing, a program Facebook announced Monday that will help small and midsize developers distribute their games.

Though just a pilot program, Mobile Games illustrates steps Facebook is taking to generate revenue from areas outside advertising. Taking a cut of partners' gaming revenue, the company will deliver targeted ads, analytics tools and the ability to work with Facebook's gaming department.

In its blog announcing the news, Facebook said, "We are invested in the success of these games, and in exchange for a revenue share, we will be collaborating deeply with developers in our program by helping them attract high-quality long-term players for their games. We'll also be sharing analytics tools and the expertise we've gained from helping games grow on our platform for more than six years."

2. Earnings results weren't just better than expected but show Facebook executing in all the major areas about which Wall Street has been nervous. Revenue growth is accelerating, and the company is generating more money from its mobile users than expected. It also disclosed some impressive numbers on its ad campaigns' return-on-investment.

Perhaps most important, CEO Mark Zuckerberg didn't hesitate to address widespread concerns.

And investors took note of the fact that Facebook's upside surprise stands in sharp contrast to Google's disappointing results, indicating that the former's social and mobile ads are gaining more traction.

3. Analysts have been speculating that Facebook will be added to the S&P 500 index within the next year, which would significantly broaden the company's investor base.

Under-the-Radar 2013-13 NBA Rookies Guaranteed to Surprise Fans

Nobody ever questioned Archie Goodwin's upside. He was projected as a lottery pick to start his freshman year at Kentucky before his stock steadily began to decline.?

But Goodwin looked sharp during summer league, finishing with at least 18 points on three different occasions. And after a disastrous year shooting the ball, he knocked down 8-of-14 (57 percent) of his three-point attempts.?

Goodwin is an explosive attacker and violent finisher, and at 6'5'', he's got good size for an NBA 2-guard. He just needs to refine his offensive game, like knowing when to pull up, draw the foul, kick it out or move the ball.

Eventually, the execution will come. He was the youngest American drafted in 2013. He's got time and freedom in Phoenix to really get going early on in his career.?

Goodwin was quoted by the AP as saying,?"He's telling me that I'm going to play right away," when speaking of coach Jeff Hornacek.?

With the Suns expected to be playing for ping-pong balls, early minutes for Goodwin should be available. ?
